Why This TikTok Trend Should Alarm Every Parent

Why We Only Allow Tweens to Use Our Teen Line—and Why This TikTok Trend Should Alarm Every Skin Professional

A new study published in Pediatrics by researchers from Northwestern University confirms a disturbing truth: TikTok is warping the way young people think about their skin, and it’s hurting them, physically and emotionally.

THE FACTS FROM THE STUDY:
Researchers analyzed 100 TikTok videos featuring skincare routines from kids and teens aged 7–18. Here's what they discovered:

  • Average age: 7–18 years

  • Average regimen cost: $168

  • 6 products per routine, often with multiple active ingredients

  • Only 26% included sunscreen

  • The top 25 most-viewed routines had up to 21 potentially irritating actives

  • 20 inactive ingredients were flagged in pediatric dermatology for allergic reactions

But it doesn’t stop at skin. The study also flagged psychological harm—many of these videos promoted the idea that brighter, smoother, lighter skin is more desirable. For children as young as 7, this obsession with flawless skin creates deeply unrealistic expectations and fuels appearance anxiety.

OUR POSITION AT ROCCOCO BOTANICALS
We’ve had countless tweens reach out wanting to become influencers. Our response is unwavering: the only line we allow them to use is our Teen Line. Why? Because it’s formulated specifically for adolescent skin with:

  • Zero irritation potential

  • No barrier damage

  • No overloaded actives

  • No false promises

We created it to support—not sabotage—skin development.

THE REAL DANGER: WHO'S INFLUENCING WHO?
This isn’t just a tween problem. Adults are following the same advice. The difference? Licensed estheticians are being drowned out by content creators with no credentials and no training.

It’s time we said it plainly: Skincare advice should come from professionals—not influencers chasing likes.

As estheticians, you are trained to understand:

  • The biology of the skin

  • The pathophysiology of acne and inflammation

  • The science of product interaction

  • And most importantly, how to protect the barrier

Unqualified content is harming skin and minds.

ESTHETICIANS: THIS IS YOUR TIME TO LEAD
This isn’t just a skincare concern—it’s a mental health crisis brewing under the guise of self-care. We must lead with facts, compassion, and professional insight.

Share this article. Start the conversations. Use your voice.

The future of skin health—and the confidence of a generation—depends on it.
